County Prep National Honor Society Raises Funds For Cancer

(Jersey City --- October, 2007) County Prep High School's chapter of the National Honor Society hosted a number of fundraising events and activities during the month of October and raised $1900 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a foundation for breast cancer research.

The events were designed to spread awareness about breast cancer and to collect donations. The first of the many events was the homeroom competition. During homeroom each day, students collected donations from their classmates and teacher. At the end of month, the homeroom that donated the most money received a Continental Breakfast. The top three homerooms were Mr. Carey, room 302, Ms. Yang, room 214, and Mr. Downes, room 403. The National Honor Society (NHS) congratulated Mr. Carey's homeroom for donating the most, and presented certificates to all homerooms as a token of their appreciation.

In addition to the homeroom competition, the NHS sold hand-made pink ribbons, which they made themselves, for $0.50 each. Explore 2000 donated to the cause by purchasing ribbons for $1.00 each. NHS also organized a "Think Pink Day," in which the faculty and students wore pink to support the fight against breast cancer. In order to make money, the students went to the faculty and asked them if they would like to donate $5 for "Think Pink Day." Faculty who made donations received a pamphlet promoting the prevention of breast cancer and a pin from the Susan G. Komen foundation.

In another creative event, and with the help of the cosmetology program, the NHS sponsored “Think Pink Manicures.” Throughout the week of October 15th–18th, staff and students could get a pink manicure for only $3. The NHS presented certificates to the cosmetology program and Explore 2000 for helping the cause.

Ms. Mendolla and the rest of the faculty would like to commend NHS on a job well done.
