County Prep Wins 2nd Place in Project Seed

(South Orange, NJ—September 25, 2007) Cristina Vo and David Gonzalez participated in Project SEED which is affiliated with the American Chemical Society. For eight weeks, they worked with Professor Libera at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. At the regional SEED poster presentation held at Seton Hall University, they placed 2nd.

Their experiment included creating a Poly (dimethylsiolanxe) (PDMS) based on microfluid device for high-sensitivity biodetection. Their long-term objective was to use the device to determine the type of bacteria associated with infection with the human body in two hours as opposed to two days.

Throughout the experiment they were able to create a proper mold to make a PDMS samples, apply microscope slides and thin layers of PDMS onto molded PDMS and create a plumbing system to insure good bonding. With the process of intensive research they will be able to cast thin films of PEG and THF onto the surface of the microscope slide, completing the device.

Principal Barbara Mendolla congratulates Cristina Vo and David Gonzalez on their achievement.
