ELEMENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL HIGH SCHOOL APPRENTICESHIP
1. BUILDING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS
Strong partnerships among high schools and colleges, businesses, students and parents, and other community organizations are vital to successful HS apprenticeships. Each partner has a key role to play – and each supplies resources needed for high-quality programs.
2. ALIGNING PROGRAMS TO INDUSTRY WORKFORCE NEEDS
Successful high school work based programs are business-driven, and the programs must be aligned to the skill needs of businesses to be effective in helping businesses build a pipeline of future workers.
3. DESIGNING QUALITY PROGRAMS
High school work based programs are based on high-quality on-the-job learning combined with related classroom instruction. Successful programs also align coursework with both high school and college requirements so that students receive all educational credentials possible, and can continue their education.
4. PROMOTING STUDENT SUCCESS
Successful programs engage in thorough recruitment and selection processes and provide students with the support they need to complete the apprenticeship and take the next steps to succeed in college and careers.
What we need from you:
Community partnerships are essential to our programming. Our district currently offers over 20 vocational majors, a partnership with you would allow our students a way to apply what they are learning in class with real-life situations. We are in need of various structured learning experiences that expose our students to occupations in their area of interest and provide them with opportunities to practice the work readiness and occupational skills they have learned during their class time. Without your participation, we would not be able to offer any of these experiences to our diverse student community.
There are plenty of ways you can help:
Field Experiences: Allow our students come in groups to visit your worksite in a controlled environment. Give groups a general overview of your worksite and career field to help them imagine what it would be like to continue in that occupation. Let them see what they can’t experience in the classroom.
Job Shadowing: Allow students to shadow what you and your employees do day-to-day. This can be a one-day event that allows our students a taste of what it would be like to work alongside you in your field. Allow students to experience regular responsibilities and expectations at the worksite.
Class Presentations: Come visit one, or both, of our locations to give a presentation on your industry to a larger class setting. Here you can talk about your field, answer questions, and address key issues students should be aware of if they would like to continue on that career trajectory.
Internships & Externships: Here, the emphasis is on on-the-job training where students can “work” with you for a set period of time. We can create a schedule that works best for all parties on the number of interns & the duration of their internship. You never know, you may be training a future employee. Internships can be paid or unpaid.
Advisory Board: Join one of our vocational advisory boards to drive curriculum based on your industry’s needs. The workplace is changing and we must inform and prepare the future workforce. Employability skills are very important, your participation on an advisory board would link you with teachers, students, alumni, parents, and other community members to discuss your field of work and how we can better prepare them for work by reinforcing goals in the classroom setting.
Apprenticeships: Here, you would be taking in students as a registered apprentice and training them in a particular skill set or trade. Apprenticeships combine hands-on work with classroom learning and are considered full-time employment. To have an apprenticeship program, you must be a business or union, provide hands-on training, teach lessons, offer compensation, and administer a nationally accredited certificate.
You may only be able to take on one of these roles, but you can participate in as much as you’d like and we can modify your role at any time. You would be doing a tremendous service to our school community.
