When a new program is planned and implemented, everyone works hard, bringing to the planning table innovative and creative ideas to be woven into an integrated curriculum. The hope is always that the students will bring their ideas and interests to create a rich and varied program.
- Ms. Marilyn Roman, HCST Director of Special Projects
This semester the students of the Academy of Architecture and Contemporary Themes completed an in-depth study of an integrated thematic unit. During facilitator planning sessions, the team developed a performance-based thematic project for the students to explore. This project incorporated all academic content areas, as well as the individualized interests of each student. Throughout the unit, the facilitators effectively guided the students, who were engaged in various field experiences, activities and mini-projects which enhanced their understanding of the academic content. Students then created a culminating project of choice to demonstrate their knowledge and interests of the unit.
The facilitators along with AACT students had the exciting chance to assess the student project presentations during their Mentor Group Sessions. On Tuesday, December 19, 2006 district faculty, parents/guardians, family members and friends had the opportunity to share in the students’ learning experiences! The visitors walked around to the different projects and witnessed the hard work and dedication that each student put forth throughout this thematic project: The Holocaust.
The presentations ranged from Technological Advancements during World War II to Fashions of the Decade. Other students explored the Music of the Era, Modern and Degenerate Art, as well as Racism in Entertainment and Sports.
Second Year student, Jared Cruz, presented a PowerPoint presentation on the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He also created a photo relief of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. “This night was very motivating because you get to view what other classmates are interested in,” said Cruz.
Ms. Roman added, “The facilitators and program administrators are to be congratulated for their efforts on behalf of the students in their care. It is exciting to see them approaching their work with enthusiasm and the will to do well. It has been a pleasure to assist everyone in the program. I look forward to the many more projects they will do…from them we all learn.”
