(Lawrenceville—April 3, 2007) Mark Zhang of Harrison, a High Tech junior, has been selected to participate in the New Jersey Scholars Program, Africa, this summer, announced Principal Karol Brancato.
New Jersey scholars participate in lectures and group seminars where they engage in extensive reading assignments and pursue research at world class libraries and museums. They write essays and work closely with a faculty member to produce a 10-15 page interdisciplinary research paper. Scholars do not receive grades and the faculty evaluates their work in an interactive fashion. As a result, they discover the love of learning for its own sake and gain confidence in their intellectual abilities.
The program topics and faculty change biennially, and over the years, the faculty have been drawn from colleges and universities such as Princeton, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, MIT and The Lawrenceville School. Students receive nominations to the program by their schools and a rigorous application process that includes writing essays, providing a paper submitted for a class, a letter of recommendation and a group interview.
The New Jersey Scholars Program offers an extraordinary intensive interdisciplinary five-week residential summer academic program at The Lawrenceville School for 39 of the most intelligent, outgoing and highly motivated rising high school seniors, all residents of New Jersey. No comparable program targets this audience.
