(Jersey City - May 5, 2008) County Prep student, Maya Daniels, has been selected to participate in the 2008 W.E.B. DuBois Institute, to be held this summer at the Princeton University campus. Ms. Daniels has also been awarded a partial scholarship to defray the costs of tuition for this program.
The W.E.B. Dubois Scholars Institute was founded in 1988, to provide promising young students with exposure to science and technology, and leadership, scholarship, community service, and entrepreneurial training to high acheiving secondary school students.
Freshman and sophomore students are eligible to apply for the program. To be considered, they must meet a variety of standards including an overall “B” average in a competitive academic program and upper quarter standing in the class. They must also provide two letters of recommendaition.
In addition, student applicants must write an essay consisting of at least 300 words stating their reasons for desiring to participate in the Institute and describing their educational and career goals, and describing the community service activities and/or leadership roles they have performed in the past.
The purpose of the progran is to develop "knowledgeable leaders and activist scholars" who will carry with them a sense of community and the confidence and skills to act as leaders for change in their schools, communities, and in society as a whole.
The program is hosted at Princeton University from June 28 to August 2, 2008. The Director of Development and Academic Services describes the program as one that will provide students the opportunity to "enhance self-understanding, self-confidence, and problem solving skills," and notes that there will also be many recreational and educational field trips scheduled throughout the month.
