WKAS Radio Huge Hit with Students

By Kristina Barrett

This semester in Mr. Richardson’s class the students created another weekly radio show to add on to the accomplishments of last year’s History, Jazz and Me which aired on WHIT radio. The new show for this year was titled KAS Culture and helped to launch the new WKAS radio station. The show would be broadcasted live on the air every Wednesday and Thursday. Students learned many things by just being involved with a radio show in general. They were able to go behind the scenes to see and feel what it was like to be a real radio broadcaster.

Each week the students would discuss different topics or debate different issues either past or present that involved this country. The class even dedicated a few shows about the hard times the country faced during Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and the American civil rights movement.

KAS Culture also broadcasted shows that focused on what was going on here at KAS Prep. Student Alyssa Matos and myself interviewed KAS Prep alumni, and Social Development teacher, Mr. Gonzalez about how he became a teacher and why he chose KAS Prep. The very next week a show was dedicated to another former KAS Prep student Mr. Walker, who now works as a Graphic Arts teacher in our school. Mr. Walker was able to share a lot of information with us, including his reasons for coming back to KAS Prep and his passion for music.

Another interesting aspect of the radio program was the incorporation of so many different classes and teachers. History, English, and Audio Technology were all involved in making WKAS radio come to life. The new Graphic Arts class was a byproduct of the new radio show creating a template for next year’s KAS Prep magazine entitled “Kasology.”

The KAS Culture show this semester was a really powerful class and we all had a lot to learn about being in a studio. Heated debates, inspirational quotes, relationship issues, music, and History is only a short list of what were able to learn and accomplish in the class.
