High Tech’s Yarn Club Crochets Scarves for U.S. Troops

(North Bergen—March 10, 2010) High Tech’s Yarn Club, moderated by Joan Marie Bellotti, has not only dedicated its talent to its school, but its altruistic efforts have reached as far as Iraq, too, announced Dr. Joseph Giammarella, Director of High Tech High School and Academy of Architectural & Contemporary Themes (AACT).

The Yarn Club—which includes Jersey City residents Shannon Pulusan (President), Trisha Briones (Vice-President), Mary Cordon (Treasurer), and Bayonne resident Jeannie Mark (Secretary)—has crocheted twenty-eight colorful scarves of various sizes for our troops stationed in Iraq. They will be shipped out in the coming days.

One of the latest clubs to spring from creative minds at High Tech, the Yarn Club now boasts twenty-three girls and boys as members, with the seasoned members teaching novice students the art of crocheting. The Yarn Club meets every Tuesday.

Recently, the Yarn Club held a sale of its crocheted merchandise to raise funds to purchase balls of yarn and discussed plans to extend their talents to such worthy causes as cancer patients and newborns. The students intend to crochet skullcaps, wristbands, even flowers and animals for their kiosk at the school’s annual Earth Day celebration sometime in May. Proceeds will benefit the World Wildlife Fund.

At present, the Yarn Club plans to sell crocheted wristbands in the mall area of the North Hudson Center of Hudson County Schools of Technology. Once more, the proceeds for that sale will go toward a worthy cause: the earthquake victims of Haiti and Chile.
