Interim Executive County Superintendent

 The Hudson County Office of the New Jersey State Department of Education functions as a state/county coordinating agency charged with providing educational leadership for 13 school districts and 13 Charter Schools. The Hudson County Superintendent of Schools is responsible for the following:

  1. Acting as an advisor of New Jersey Department of Education laws, rules, regulations and acting as liaison between local chief school administrators and the public;

  2. Assisting applicants in the Teacher Certification process, NJDOE Office of Licensure and Credentials, in the State of New Jersey;

  3. Coordinating input of materials from school districts for the completion of reports including monitoring, state report cards, mandatory testing, etc;

  4. Supporting the Executive County School Business Administrator who is responsible for preparation of the review process of all school budgets, pupil transportation, school elections, and other financial reports;

  5. Supporting the County Supervisor of Child Study for special education students in Hudson County;

  6. Supporting the Education Specialist in reviewing school district reports and applications such as Quality Assurance Annual Reports, Professional Development Plans, Special Review Assessments (SRA), Summer School Applications, Comprehensive Equity Plans and Annual Review of Progress, Technology Plans, and No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Applications. The County Education Specialist also reviews Bilingual/ESL Program Plans in conjunction with the Bilingual Education/ESL/Equity Coordinator.

  7. Coordinating monthly roundtable meeting with all local chief school administrators and various county-wide educational seminars;

  8. Hudson County is a member of the Northern Region Coordinating Counties. Other counties include Bergen, Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren.

The County (46.6 square land miles - 12 municipalities – 608,075 population per the 2000 census) has 24 school districts (12 school districts, 1 vocational school and 13 charter schools) with approximately 86,613 pupils.
There are 124 school buildings in the 13 school districts/13 charter schools with approximately 7,976 full-time instructional, supervisory and administrative personnel. Local school budgets prepared for the 2008-2009 school year, from all sources, amount to a total in excess of $1 billion.
All school districts are engaged in improving curriculum and increasing professional development opportunities. There has been a marked expansion of offerings in vocational-technical education, alternative and special needs education, adult education, new courses and methodologies in the general curriculum, facility planning, and vocational-technical education.
