Structure Learning Work Experience and Community Building Come Together at County Prep

Congratulations to Edison Cheng and Diego Andrade on their successful completion of the Structured Learning Experience working with the Bayonne Reads Committee in Bayonne, NJ. Bayonne Reads--One Book, One Community is a community and literacy building project that had its 1st kick off event on May 30th, 2019 at the Bayonne Public Library.
Ms. Maria Rubio, County Prep’s Graphic Technology Instructor worked with her students alongside the representative of the Bayonne Reads Committee member, Caroline Ulivella to create the logo (at left) for this important community project. Diego and Edison work with graphic technology programs including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Indesign. When asked what they liked best about working on the project they made several comments including the opportunity to:  experience what it is like to work with a client, see their project develop from a rough sketch to a finished product, be creative in meeting the client’s needs and to be able to support a non profit, community event.

Not only did the students work in a real world environment on a project that went through several stages of revision, (deadlines included) but they were able to contribute to a community event that endeavors to bring people together to discuss important issues and pay tribute to those who fought for their country and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Modeled on programs like PBS’s The Big Read and the American Library Association's One Book, One Community, Bayonne Reads will be hosting community-wide discussions after participants have read the book, The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien. Bayonne Reads would like to thank Superintendent, Amy Lin-Rodriguez, County Prep Principal, Barbara Mendolla, Graphic Technology Instructor, Maria Rubio, and her students, Diego Andrade and Edison Cheng for each of their roles in supporting this project.
