Two County Prep Dance Students to Perform at Brooklyn Academy of Music

Ms. Heather Warfel Sandler, Instructor of Dance at County Prep, is thrilled to announce that two County Prep dance majors will have the honor of performing at the renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Fisher Theater this weekend.  Tamir Rios and Tamijah Southerland are both members of County Prep’s 407 Dance Company, and are second and third year students in the dance program.  In addition to their dance training at County Prep, Tamir and Tamijah study ballet and modern dance with Jersey City dance company Nimbus Dance Works, under the direction of Samuel Pott.  Mr.Pott is an important figure in the Jersey City Dance community, as well as a member of the board of Dance NJ.
Tamir and Tamijah also performed with Nimbus Dance Company in December for their annual “Jersey City Nutcracker,” in which Tamir danced a lead role. The County Prep dance program has collaborated with Nimbus in the past, through classes, workshops, and performances, and looks forward to an ongoing relationship with this prominent company.
This weekend Nimbus Dance Works presents Public Forum: Dance, Race and Social Justice featuring a program of dance works with social justice themes. The students will be performing the work Minus Humanity, choreographed by Nimbus professional dancer Lara Spence, alongside college dancers from New Jersey City University.  Tamijah, a junior at County Prep, says, “I have been to BAM on several field trips with Ms.Warfel, and [have] seen some amazing professional companies there.  I am excited to perform in the same space.”  Tamir is “happy that his choreographer recognized his hard work and dedication, and trusted his ability to perform in a professional production.”
Both students have worked extensively on their modern dance technique and on using expression in performance. Ms.Warfel is so proud that they will be able to showcase their great talents in such a prestigious venue.
